Project description

Working in a humanitarian context involves high levels of stress, emotional strain, and ongoing challenges that directly affect the mental health of workers. In addition to standard work factors, humanitarian professionals work in conditions of heightened security risks, administrative pressure, and constant interaction with vulnerable communities.

Since February 2022, many employees of national humanitarian organizations in Ukraine have been working continuously, often combining professional challenges with personal circumstances such as forced displacement or separation from their loved ones. This leads to professional burnout, emotional exhaustion, and other mental health difficulties.

The pilot project is being implemented by the NGO Resource Center in partnership with The HALO Trust and focuses on systematic psychosocial support for humanitarian workers. The project combines training activities, individual psychological counseling, and crisis response, promotes a culture of open dialogue and reduces stigma around mental health in the workplace.

Main project activities

Capacity building and resilience

Within the framework of the project, the NGO Resource Center is conducting 12 one-day training sessions adapted to the operational context of The HALO Trust. Training topics include:

  • stress management and self-help techniques;
  • first psychological aid for acute stress reactions;
  • prevention of professional burnout;
  • effective communication in conditions of increased workload.

Individual psychological counseling

The project provides 40 individual counselling sessions for The HALO Trust employees. Counselling is provided by psychologists from the NGORC pool of specialists, with the option to choose a specialist, which promotes trust and effective support. The number of sessions per employee is determined individually depending on their needs.

Responding to traumatic events

NGORC provides group and/or individual psychological support in cases of potentially traumatic events, including loss of loved ones, shelling, evacuations, or accidents that affect employees.

Supervision for NGORC psychologists

As part of the project, a supervision session is held for NGORC psychologists with the aim of providing professional support, ensuring compliance with ethical standards, and guaranteeing the quality of psychological assistance.

Principles of implementation

The partnership between NGORC and The HALO Trust is based on ongoing open dialogue, mutual trust, and regular communication. NGORC ensures the confidentiality of all recipients of psychological support, and the partner does not request information that could violate these principles.

Funded by: Minderoo Foundation

The work of deminers requires extreme concentration, and chronic stress and fatigue can affect safety and efficiency. Our goal is to provide specialists with tools that will help them maintain emotional balance and prevent professional burnout. NGORC, in partnership with The HALO Trust and with financial siupport from Minderoo, is implementing a project to strengthen the psychological resilience of personnel.
The project involves 12 specialized events aimed at capacity building and resilience development for employees. Eash event is an intensive one-day training adapted to the real operating conditions in which demining teams work throughout Ukraine. In addition, employees are offered the opportunity for individual counseling with the NGORC team of psychologists.
