From September 2 to 24, Lviv hosted a certification program by the Center for Child Dignity at the Ukrainian Catholic University — “Creating a Safe Environment for Children: Safety Policy in an Organization.” The program was organized by the NGO Resource Centre within a project implemented with the support of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland.

The program brought together representatives of civil society organizations from frontline regions of Ukraine — Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and Odesa oblasts — who work with children every day in wartime conditions, doing everything possible to protect and support them.

The certification program consisted of three mandatory modules:

  • a theoretical offline module in Lviv,
  • individual online consultations,
  • independent work on implementing each organization’s own safety policies.

During the training, participants had the opportunity to delve deeper into the topics of child dignity and child protection

🔹 Khrystyna Shabat, Head of the Center for Child Dignity at UCU, spoke about the concept of child dignity, potential safety risks, and the impact of childhood experiences on later life.

🔹 Yuliana Maslak, child psychiatrist, outlined the causes of childhood trauma and ways to minimize its effects.

🔹 Anastasiia Shyroka, psychologist and associate professor at the Department of Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Faculty of Health Sciences, UCU, emphasized the role of “safe adults” in a child’s life and the importance of creating an environment of trust.

The final module focused on the topic of zero tolerance for violence within civil society organizations and on building a friendly and safe environment for both children and adults.

A partnerships manager from our organization also took part in the program to deepen her knowledge on implementing child safeguarding policies within the work of the civil society sector.

“A safeguarding policy and a code of conduct are not just documents, but tools that establish clear rules of interaction and help protect every child and every adult within the organization.”

We thank all participants for their engagement, openness to sharing experiences, and shared understanding of the importance of creating a safe environment for children.
